wyzant review

Tutoring has always been a great way for those with teaching skills to make extra cash on the side.

If there was a negative to tutoring, it would have to be the fact that it has to be done in person.

But with technology advancing the way it has over the years, no longer do you need to be physically present to tutor.

Because of this, more and more companies are helping freelancers find ways to connect tutors with students through digital means.

Which brings us to this Wyzant Review. But what is Wyzant, and are they legit? In this review, I plan on answering those very questions for you.

wyzant summary review

Summary: Wyzant is an online tutoring program that acts as a freelance marketplace for online and in-person tutoring. The problem with this company is that the potential to earn decent money is very low. Not only that, there is a profit-sharing system that eats at a lot of your income. You also have to worry about being scammed by those you’re tutoring. If you’re in need of making money online, I would recommend searching for alternatives.

What Is Wyzant?

The great thing about technology is that it allows people to be more accessible regardless of where you are in the world.

So when it comes to those looking for tutors, no longer do you need to be in the same room.

Companies like Wyzant have created online communities/marketplaces for tutors and students.

Wyzant is currently located in Chicago, Illinois and have been in business since 2005. From what I’ve seen, this is probably one of the oldest online tutoring sites around.

With that being said, just because they’ve been around a while, doesn’t equate to a good money making opportunity.

An Inside Look Into Wyzant

In order to work with Wyzant, you have to be a US resident, and have a valid social security number. You also have to be at least 18 years old.

The process for becoming a Wyzant tutor is similar to searching for a job.

You have to submit your resume with cover letter into their system, where it will get looked at for review.

Once accepted, you will be asked to take a series of proficiency tests and written assessments for the subject you’re interested in teaching.

There are about 8-20 multiple choice questions where you get only one attempt.

Maybe one of the great things about becoming a Wyzant tutor, is the low barrier of entry when it comes to educational requirements.

If you’re worried if you need some type of teachers license to teach, that is not the case with Wyzant.

What you will have to worry about is the level of competition when it comes to other tutors in the marketplace.

If you’re someone that doesn’t have a lot of experience tutoring, unfortunately you may find yourself competing with those with a lot more experience.

When it comes to the equipment that’s needed, all you need is a laptop or PC, a stable internet connection, a webcam, and microphone.

Although some money has to be spent on some of these items, it’s relatively affordable assuming you already have a laptop or PC.

How Much Does Wyzant Pay/Cost?

If you plan on becoming a Wyzant tutor, be prepared to go through a background check, which is something that will have to come out of your pocket.

However, this is only for those that plan on doing in-person tutoring.

If you plan on offering your services online, then you will not have to go through a background check.

When it comes to hourly rates, the amount of hours you put in will dictate how much you earn.

There’s also a profit-sharing system you will need to be a part of with Wyzant.

I searched hard to find how much a tutor gets paid per hour, but I was unable to find anything concrete.

I did check on glassdoor, and the pay looks to be between $10 to $12 per hour on average.

Just know that the more hours you work, the less of a percentage Wyzant will take from you.

Rate Schedule

Below is the rate schedule for Wyzant:

0-20 hrs: 40% (shared with Wyzant)

21-50 hrs: 35% (shared with Wyzant)

51-200 hrs: 30% (shared with Wyzant)

201-400 hrs: 25% (shared with Wyzant)

401+hrs: 20% (shared with Wyzant)

You get to keep 100% of your payment if when you refer a student, but Wyzant still gets to keep the service fee.

Once you reach a certain amount of hours, there are no more incentives to be had.

When it comes to how you receive payment, I wasn’t able to find many payment methods other than direct deposit.

What I Like About Wyzant

I tried really hard to find something to like, but it was just too many negative things about this company. But if I were to find something, I do like that there is a marketplace for freelancers to find some work.

What I Don’t LIke About Wyzant

#1. Low Earnings Potential

You would think that with the hourly rate Wyzant offers, the potential to earn a decent income would be possible.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

The reason being is you’re dealing with a marketplace full of other well qualified tutors. So you’re competing against others who may or may not be qualified.

Even if you’re consider yourself highly qualified, you’re competing against those who may charge far less just to get hired.

This can make getting what you’re worth extremely difficult in an open marketplace like this.

#2. Lack Of Trust

One issue I’ve read about was tutors being scammed. This is probably one of the main reasons I wouldn’t be able to recommend this program.

You see, Wyzant makes the guarantee that it can match students with the best tutors needed.

If they are unable to do so, students are refunded a full hour with the tutor.

But Wyzant doesn’t offer the same protections to tutors. So you’re pretty much at the mercy of students when it comes to getting paid.

Sadly, this is the case with many other online tutor programs out there.

#3. Terminated Accounts

There have also been complaints about tutors getting their accounts terminated for no apparent reason.

It could have something to do with the amount of refunds issued against a particular tutor, but it could also be for other reasons.

I think the biggest issue with this is the lack of communication. When you get fired from being a Wyzant tutor, there’s really no explanation.

If you try contacting support, they give the excuse that they have no details as to why you were fired.

I’m sure you can see how this level of support can lead to tutors being scammed out of being paid by students.

#4. Profit Sharing

It’s pretty hard to make good money when the company you’re working with is taking such a large percentage.

And when I say large, I mean 40 percent of whatever you earn per session.

Some of you may not agree, but if you’re someone that relies heavily on this, it could be a huge drag on your earnings.

Also, they offer memberships to students, so why do they also need to take such a large percentage from tutors.

I don’t know about you, but it would be hard for me to accept such terms.

Is Wyzant A Scam?

Despite all the negative aspects to this company, Wyzant is definitely legit.

The fact that there is a marketplace for tutors to find work and get paid, makes it credible. However there are issues when it comes to tutors earning money.

The income potential is way too low for anyone looking to do this full time.

Also the fact that there is a profit-sharing model makes it even more difficult to earn money.

If it were me, I would look for other online tutoring programs, or just look for other ways to make money online.
