If you haven’t figured it out already, i’m talking about exercising. But how do you make money exercising?
That’s a good question. Although there are a number of ways to make money exercising, I plan on going over one of the best ways to do it in today’s social environment.
Something that has worked for me and many others that use this method. But before I do that, let me give you a brief history on my background.
What Drives My Passion
I’ve always been the type of person that was into fitness, but the thought of making money from it never really crossed my mind.
It wasn’t until I got tired of working a 9-5 office job where I decided to make a change in my career.
So before leaving my office job back in 2015, I was trying to figure out a way to make money doing something I was really passionate about.
It wasn’t until I heard commercials over the radio about becoming a personal trainer where I finally decided now was the time.
Being a personal trainer and making money doing something I love seemed like the right move, or so I thought.
A year in, I quickly came to the conclusion that being a personal trainer wasn’t something I could see myself doing long term since I only get paid when i’m training clients.
Even though I loved helping people get in shape, securing my financial future had to take priority.
So the goal for me was to find a way to still help people live a healthy lifestyle, but do it in a more efficient rate while making money.
So the first step was to find a target audience.
Figure Out Your Target Audience
Knowing your audience is one of the most important aspects when it comes to any business. It’s easy to think that selling to everyone will make you the most money, but that is far from the case.
Looking at the fitness industry, it has so many avenues in which you could choose to go about making money.
But if you plan on succeeding long term in this, narrowing down your search is crucial.
When I first started my health and fitness blog, I would talk about all types of things related to fitness. But I found it very difficult to get traction, and I didn’t really know why.
It was when I started to really focus on one subject which was weight loss, where I started to see things moving in the right direction.
The reason for this was, the more I talked about weight loss, the more people started to see me as an expert in the weight loss field.
Now when I use the term expert, I don’t mean you need some Phd in the weight loss industry.
But by targeting a specific group, people saw me as someone that was there to answer all their questions regarding losing weight.
People want to know that you understand their problem and are willing to put in the effort to help solve their problems.
And it’s hard to do that if you’re talking about bodybuilding, sports, or youth fitness even.
So it’s important to become that expert in one area, and once you’ve developed that reputation, you can slowly branch out to other subjects related to fitness.
Start a Fitness Blog
Once you’ve figure out your target audience, it’s time to build a platform to spread your message.
Building a website and blogging on it is one of the best ways reach the most amount of people with the least amount of effort.
Earlier I spoke about not wanting to be a personal trainer for the long term because my income was so reliant on training clients.
So if a client cancelled, I wasn’t getting paid.
I had to find a way to share my knowledge of fitness and still get paid doing it.
Not only did having a website allow me to do this, I was able to reach more people compared to training clients as a personal trainer.
Once I was able to get my website up and running, the next thing was learning how to make money with a fitness blog.
Just because you have a website doesn’t mean you automatically start making money with it. There’s a lot that goes into figuring out how to monetize your blog on the internet.
So I did my research on other blogs that make money, and noticed most successful blogs have these 7 key characteristics:
- An idea of who they’re targeting
- A lot of content on their site
- They provide value to their readers
- They have traffic coming to their site
- Are well designed
- Easy to use and navigate around their site
Have clear call to actions
Now there are many other characteristics of a successful website, but the 7 I’ve listed above tend to be the most popular.
Regardless of what methods you use to build your blog, it’s important that you at least have a blog.
It doesn’t cost a lot of money to start, and there are many tools that will help you do it.
WordPress is one of the most popular platforms today, so you should definitely look into it if you’re serious about getting started.
Attract Visitors To Your Website
Now that you have your blog setup, it’s now time to get people to it. Because what’s the point of blogging if there’s no one to read what you have to say.
So when it comes to having a website, there are many types of traffic used to get people to their site.
Some of those ways are:
- Organic traffic
- Paid traffic
This is one of the most popular forms of traffic mainly because it’s free. When starting your website, this form of traffic will be the one that is mainly used.
Although this form of traffic is considered the most popular one, it’s also the one that takes the longest to get.
The main reason is google doesn’t see your site as an authority site yet.
So it can take a few months before google starts to ranks your blog articles within their search engines.
But don’t let that scare you, sites that are successful long term, all have a lot of organic traffic coming to their site.
Once your site is established in the internet space, you may think about paying for traffic.
Many sites that are making money use paid traffic in the form of advertisement to help drive visitors to their site.
Keep in mind that this method requires a bit of knowledge, so you definitely want to make sure you know what you’re doing before getting into it.
Because you can easily lose money with this method
You would be crazy not to use social media as a way to help drive traffic to your site.
With so many people on social media these days, this is a great opportunity to get a lot of eyeballs to your blog.
Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube, if done correctly, these media platforms can help take your site to a whole new level.
This type of traffic is when someone visits your site from another site.
If you’re writing content that people like to read, many times you will have other sites featuring a particular article that goes directly to your site.
This is a really good thing because that means you are providing a lot of value to those reading your blog.
Once your site starts building more authority in the online space, more and more people will want to come to your site.
So direct traffic can happen in two ways pretty much.
Either you tell a friend about your site, and they type in the domain name which brings them directly to your site.
Or they visit organically, leave, but came back to your site because they like what you have to say.
So every time you visit your favorite sites on a daily basis, you are providing that site with direct traffic.
So now you have a better idea of the type of traffic you could get to your site.
The next question is, how do you get this traffic to your site, and why organic traffic is the best method to use. And the way you do that is by creating content.
The Importance Of Creating Content
In order to make money with your site, you need to have visitors. The best way to get those visitors is by creating content.
Like I said before, what’s the point of visiting your site if you have nothing for the visitor to consume.
And since this is going to be fitness site where you will talk about exercising, you need to make sure you have content that reflects that.
Whether you’re showing videos of you actually exercising, or talking about effective ways to stay in shape through exercise.
Whatever you decide to do, you need to make sure that it is on your blog site. Another reason this is important is because of Google.
The more content you have on your site, the better chance google will list your article within their search engine.
And if you are able to get your article listed in the first page of google, there’s a greater potential for people to visit your site when searching.
Earlier I mentioned organic traffic being the most popular form of traffic. Well you get this type of traffic by creating content on your site and getting it listed within google.
So how do you come up with things to write about?
The fitness industry is full of things to talk about. The difficult part is figuring out what people are searching for on the internet.
Lucky for you though, there are tools that can help you find exactly what people are searching for online.
Using keyword tools like Jaaxy, that tell you how many times a particular keyword is being searched for each month.
And based on these keywords, you can come up with weight loss topics to write on your blog.
Promote On Social Media
If you’re looking to make money exercising, one of the best ways to showcase those workouts is through social media.
Whether you’re looking to post pictures of yourself working out, or an actual video, social media gets the job done.
The goal of social media is to gain as many followers and engage with them as much as possible.
And depending on the platform you use and how many followers you have, you can also get paid for it.
I’m sure you see it all the time, especially on Instagram.
There are so many people promoting fitness on there, and for good reason.
If they can get eyeballs to their page, these social media platforms will pay them to keep up with it.
So if you think you have what it takes to become the next social media fitness model, then it can definitely be a lucrative venture.
Once you’re able to get traffic to your blog site, and gain the trust of those following you, it’s time to monetize on that traffic.
For those just starting out, the best way to do this is by recommending products to your visitors.
And since you’re looking to make money in fitness, you can recommend all types of products and services.
Even better, you can receive a commission from anyone that makes a purchase. This is called affiliate marketing.
Where companies ask you to promote their products/services, and are willing to pay you a commission if anyone decides to buy.
They do this by providing you with a link that you can post on any article within your site.
So the more people you can get to your website, the more potential earnings that is available to you.
